Yesterday I was confronted by a very angry frustrated customer who’s computer was unusable. She is not alone. Computers today play a critical part in all our lives, they are the umbilical cord to life on the internet. They are not just a convenience, but a necessity. And without it your day to day becomes very different. Your entire life’s history often lives on that critical piece of equipment. Your pictures, movies, contacts, email, all on this fragile system that ALWAYS FAILS at some point.
EVERY COMPUTER GOES BAD. It doesn’t matter the brand or how much you paid for it. They all contain the same weak link, a hard drive, the place all your information resides. Additionally you have Virus’s, malware, foolware or just basic everyday OS corruption any of which can be fatal to your data and computer. THESE ALL HAVE BEEN PART OF COMPUTING SINCE THE WE BEGAN USING THEM.
They are no different than say you car or even your own body. You have to take care of them and most importantly YOUR DATA. Once you are faced with disaster, It’S TO LATE, and you have only yourself to be frustrated with.
Having an infected computer means your computer is sick, it’s exactly the same thing as if you get sick. If you have not prepared for this, as in the case of the very angry frustrated client, it will be an expensive and time consuming ordeal. Your computer is sick and there are several options available to try to heal it. The only 100% fix is to amputate the hard drive. But if you have not been responsible or computer ignorant this is the last desperate option you can make. So you are forced to try less drastic measures. Sometimes you get lucky and they work, most time you don’t. Just like your doctor prescribes antibiotics it may not work the first time or your illness is immune or it has spread to other areas and more drastic measures are required. You are still responsible for all your treatment costs.
In the case of the frustrated angry customer she had done nothing to prepare for this.
1. Had never made a backup.
2. Did not have any programs or keys needed to reinstall with.
3. Did not know passwords and setting.
4. Did not own an external hard drive or use cloud backup because of ignorance and cost.
No one can save you at this point, it is to late. The likely hood that everything on that drive is infected is very real. That means that all your data is corrupt and lost.
You are now looking at a very expensive and time consuming problem.
BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER, IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO ASK OR PAY SOMEONE TO DO IT EVERY MONTH AT LEAST.
KEEP YOUR SOFTWARE DISKS OR IF YOU DOWNLOADED IT THE EMAIL CONTAINING THE LINKS AND KEYS NEEDED
KEEP AN ACURATE RECORD OF ALL YOUR PASSWORDS.
If you are unable or unwilling to do these be prepared to spend a lot of money.
