Windows 8 the Consumer Preview Edition

The next-generation Windows has somewhat arrived. This is the much-anticipated Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It is a radical departure from previous Windows versions. This attempts to do what no other operating system has ever tried. The idea, is to have a single piece of software that works on lots of different segments of computers. It will allow your experience on a tablet to be the same as a laptop or desktop or even a phone. It also means for the first time that Windows will work correctly on a touch screen. For several generations of Windows you have had the ability of a touch screen but it was always cumbersome and only found a home in small business niches. This new Windows will compete directly with the Apple and Android worlds.

Up until now the draw for tablet has been about convenience. Small lightweight easy-to-use way to consume content. And for millions of people this is been sufficient. Considering most people who purchased these tablets have very minimal needs. Checking e-mail, browsing on the web, maybe a little Facebook and that about takes care of it. The vast majority of computer users have held off and not purchased any type of tablet. For them, the simple logic that there smart phone does everything and more than the present-day tablets. What all of these people are waiting for is a real reason to get tablet and THAT is what is about to happen.

How about a single device that incorporates all the best things that tablets have brought to the market. A light portable way to consume content, play games and of all those fun. And, in addition, this tablet will also run a complete and full version of Windows. That means you can do real productivity. The full and complete office product, Photoshop, QuickBooks, and the literally millions of existing Windows applications. This is a total game changer. Computers as we know them today are about to go through the biggest evolution since the keyboard and mouse.

In order to accomplish this it requires, CHANGE. One of if not the most scary words in the English language. As much as I hear people beg and plead for Microsoft to become relevant, I also hear the inevitable whining about change. When Windows 8 starts up, and may I add very quickly, you are greeted to a screen. A screen for all intense purposes that does nothing other than show your time. This is different. And for lots of people that’s not okay. The only thing that Microsoft can do to make these people happy is not change, and that’s not going to happen. So you are going to have lots of people bitching and whining, stamping their feet insisting I will not change. To those people I have to say, I guess your fucked.

What one quickly figures out if you are on a standard computer with keyboard and mouse, you hold down the mouse button at the bottom of the screen and pull up. This reveals a login screen exactly like every other version of Windows. If you have a Microsoft account and you use that to login with, you have the added benefit syncing across all your accounts. You are now greeted with the famous Metro tiles. One of them front and center, is a tile for your desktop. When you click on that you are now looking at exactly the same screen as your Windows 7. With one very big CHANGE. The start button has been reconceived, the actual button is no longer visible. However, when you bring your cursor to the exact same spot where the start button was and click, you are returned to this app page. This app page IS your start menu. Once you wrap your head around that, you understand the genius. Previously in order to do a search you had to click the start button and then click into the search bar. Now, you bring your mouse to the left bottom corner click and just start typing, anywhere, it doesn’t matter. That start page is smart enough to know what you’re doing and will immediately bring up an even better more relevant search results. People, this is a good thing.

There are no Windows 8 tablets on the market today. There are very few models that were prepared for Windows 7 and can be loaded with the new Windows but those are not commonplace. Because of that the only real way to experience Windows 8 today is on a standard desktop or laptop computer and that honestly is not how Windows 8 is to be experienced. Add to the fact, that the apps for Metro have not been written. Once this echo system begins to mature people in hindsight will look back and say, now I get it. Lots more to follow about this massive change.
